Start A Blog for your Business

Why start a blog for your business? Many reasons…

A blog is a very efficient way to keep your customers (and prospects) informed of new products and services, specials and events. You simply log into your control panel, start typing and click publish (this ‘posts’ your news to your blog). There is no software required and you can even upload an image or two as well.

Feedback. You have the ability to enable comments on each post you write. You can offer opinion on a subject to generate commentary or even use it as a quick survey tool to get direct feedback on one of your products or services.

Email your posts. It is also very easy to set up your blog to automatically email out your post to your mailing list. Think about it. You can log in, write an article and when you click the Publish button it will post the article on the home page, archive the previous article below it AND email out that article to your subscriber list. We call it ‘1 click publishing.’ Nice eh?

RSS. Blogs have something called RSS built in which allows the growing crowd with RSS readers to subscribe via an RSS feed. These ‘readers’ automatically update your latest blog posts in their reader. In a way the reader sucks in (feeds) your new posts every time you publish. More and more people are turning to RSS as a very efficient way to keep track of a large amount of information sources (rather than having their email box cluttered up).

Google juice. A blog is full of content that changes regularly and Google knows this so it comes back frequently to check for the latest posts. The more good content you have on a subject the better you will do in Google and the rest of the search engine crowd.

What makes a blog successful? Choose a topic that is as narrow as possible. This will give you great appeal to that segment. For instance a colleague of mine publishes information on how to write a good email newsletter for your business (bluepenguindevelopment.com). Another blog covers how to deal with chronic illness in the workplace (keepworkinggirlfriend.com). These narrow topics generate great viewership since the information focuses deeply on a very targeted audience. The smaller your focus the bigger you will get.

Also… share your opinion. Don’t hold back. Most interesting reading comes from those who go out a bit on that limb and share their opinion. Opinion generates commentary and you want subscribers to engage in your thoughts and therefore your business.
